Big Air Freeride

Going fast, flying high, the Nitro 6 is the ultimate in freeride performance.

Since the beginning of kiteboarding big air freeriding has been at the core of what makes kiteboarding so awesome.
The Nitro has always been the perfect high performance freeride machine for anyone looking to enjoy massive big air tricks. All the key elements are there: control, power, speed, strength and ease of use. This perfect balance has given the Nitro a cult following and made it our number 1 selling kite.

  • Ultimate boost, extended hang time, soft landings
  • Maximum wind range
  • Direct power turns
  • Light-to-medium bar pressure
  • Easy re-launch including reverse launch

What's new?

The new Nitro6 is the most refined version in the history of the Nitro line. Although the Nitro6 closely resembles the Nitro5 when viewed aloft, every seam and panel has been changed to optimize the design for improved overall performance and handling. The Nitro6 is a completely new kite entirely designed to be the best Nitro ever without losing the traditional dynamic character.

  • First, the Nitro6 airfoil has been completely re-profiled moving the draft aft in the center and reducing the entry angle for a cleaner, smoother de-power response. The profile has also been reduced and smoothed spanwise toward the wingtips for less luffing in the shoulders and overall drag reduction. The Nitro6 canopy is tight and exhibits less distortion throughout the bar throw.
  • Second, the planform has been changed with increased sweep starting in the shoulders and extending to the wingtip to improve relaunch, dynamic stability, and de-powered line tension.
  • Third, due to the change in profile, the struts have been re-designed to not only match the profile changes but to enhance stability, reduce weight and increase durability. In concert with the planform change, the Leading Edge tube has also been reconfigured.

Performance Changes

  • Faster turning speed and boost
  • Better loops
  • Improved and reliable relaunch
  • Shorter, smoother depower bar throw and smoother in gusty conditions.

Is this kite right for you

High-flying big-air masters or riders who just love high speed cruising will equally find the Nitro answering their prayers. The Nitro brings performance kiting to a whole new level of ease and response.

Power Wingtips

Longer angled wingtips move the front and rear tow points apart providing more leverage for turning and sheeting with lower bar pressure. The increased wingtip area creates additional lift during manoeuvres for enhanced turning and longer float in jumps. The moved back steering line tow point location and greater wingtip area provide reverse launch and increased re-launch leverage in lighter winds. The more forward power line tow point location improves de-power.

Spider Bridle

We have created a totally new and innovative short bridle that has the look of a Spiders web, one of the most beautiful, light and strong constructs found in nature. The upper ‘Spider’ portion of the bridle stabilizes the mid-to-shoulder areas of the kite while simultaneously controlling the wingtips limiting flaring and oscillating movements. The lower portion optimally positions the front tow point for de-power and turning. The ‘Spider Junction,’ where the two portions meet allows the kite to tip with no change in the load distribution along the leading edge. The result is quick, yet smooth de-power, fast turning, lower bar pressure and consistent rear line tension for control sheeted out. Re-launch is improved and tangles are eliminated. The Spider has unlocked the true potential of the Nitro series.

5-Strut Design

High Aspect (span squared/area) maximizes lift while reducing drag for efficiency and upwind speed and angle. 5-Struts provide canopy shape stability to create power without distortion.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Constant curve leading edge

Constant curve leading edge

The canopy shape is supported by a defined constant curve Leading Edge tube design without any flat sections or nodal corners. This allows us to create a rigid structure with reduced tube diameters for a more efficient lower drag shape and improved performance.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Trailing Edge Flow Control

Trailing Edge Flow Control

Lightweight, 4 layered internally glued Monofilm stiffeners are strategically placed along the trailing edge to increase efficiency by minimizing coning and eliminating flapping.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Canopy Material

Canopy Material

Next to the actual kite design, the canopy fabric plays a very important role in your kite’s performance. Fabrics, with different stretch characteristics, will have an important effect on bar pressure, turning speed and the overall crisp feeling of your kite. A quick and lively kite can become dull and slow with heavy bar pressure when made with a different material. SwitchKites is constantly testing different materials in our test laboratory and in real life applications. After 16 months of testing, for our Element4, we have chosen a new 56 gr/m2 double rip stop fabric which has a 37% higher puncture tensile strength in the critical warp direction, with minimal weight increase. Being truly an all-terrain kite, we felt this feature was important for our customers who will use there kites in all possible demanding conditions.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Trailing Edge Material

Trailing Edge Material

Modern kite fabrics are incredibly strong and durable considering their light weight. However, the two main enemies are UV and flapping. Unfortunately, a brand new kite sitting on the beach in high winds can be destroyed within a few hours as the rigorous fabric movement during flapping causes the coating of the cloth to break down prematurely permanently weakening it. Unfortunately there are instances where flapping cannot be avoided. We therefore use Chang Ho TT887, a 78 gr/m2 double rip-stop fabric which has a 173% higher tensile strength and excellent wind-flapping resilience in the trailing edge sections. As a result, we have substantially prolonged the life expectancy of this critical kite section.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Leading Edge and Strut Material

Leading Edge and Strut Material

We use Dimension-Polyant Dacron exclusively. Dimension-Polyant Dacron is the only sailcloth manufacturer with its own ultra- modern sailcloth-weaving mill and a unique finishing plant where the fabrics pass through a 14-stage program. Weaving, finishing and laminating – all in one location, made in Germany. It’s the most stable and durable structure that ensures the designed shape is retained for ultimate performance.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Double Dacron Strut Joints and Valve Positions

Double Dacron Strut Joints and Valve Positions

All stitching locations on any struts are internally reinforced first with Dacron and then adhesive-backed Dacron Mark Cloth to ensure the stitching doesn’t compromise the material. Strut seams are double stitched with a larger thread. Strut attachments are reinforced with webbing and all valve positions have extra reinforcing to prevent blowouts under high pressures and crashes.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Glued and Overlaid Seam Construction

Glued and Overlaid Seam Construction

We glue and double stitch the seams. One straight stitch folded over would be much faster and cheaper to produce, but it is simply not as strong.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Framed Canopy

Framed Canopy

Fully glued canopy framing of Dacron and adhesive-backed Mark Cloth for extra strength along struts, leading edge, trailing edges and wingtips.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Reinforced Strut/Canopy Attachment

Reinforced Strut/Canopy Attachment

We added an additional layer of Canopy material and a doubled angular reinforcement at the Leading Edge in all strut areas to create a solid foundation for our struts and reduce impact failure during high velocity crashes.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Canopy Attachment

Canopy Attachment

Why are we not using one single row of three-step zigzag like all the others? Every added hole in the leading edge weakens the structure. If you need to add holes, they must be spaced out as far as possible. We use a more time consuming two rows of two-step zigzag to produce considerable added strength to the design.

Kiteboarding Freeride Big Air Kite Nitro 6 - Bomb Proof Leading Edge Closure

Bomb Proof Leading Edge Closure

Double-reinforced with Dacron, the LE seam is fully glued, double-folded and double stitched with an exterior webbing cover for ultimate strength and durability. Extra heavy thread is used to protect against ruptures and blowouts.

One is good. Two is better. We use two parallel seams on our durable TPU bladders, plus reinforced valve locations.

Power to jump Review by Kaji

I've had my new Nitro 6 14m for about 2 months now. I've had it out in 10 - 20 knots.
I've been kiting for 5 years and weigh around 85kg so the 14m is my light to mid wind kite.

First impressions are great. Quality, workmanship, and materials are top notch. As good if not better than any other brand kite I've had.

Out on the water I found the Nitro 6 to do everything you would expect from a modern kite. Depower, wind range, safety and great all-around usability.
The key areas where I found the nitro to excel in are:
Speed - You feel comfortable and in total control at top speed. It also carries its speed up wind too.
Jumping - It hands down jumps higher and with the longest hangtime of any 14m kite I've ever flown. But best of all during jumps you feel in total control, No more sketchy landings!!

So to wrap it up I'm absolutely stoked on this kite. Everything I could of asked for in a new kite with quick delivery and at the best price I could find. (Posted on 11/01/17)
BIG AIR IS COMING !Review by Sebastien
Construction : Still BOMB PROOF !

Better relaunch compare to v5 and better stability in light wind, turning speed is also better.

For more infos, check the social forum on the website, i put a complete review with video + picture !

More powerful and faster than V5Review by Jun Switch
This week I got 10m,12m NitroV6 and was able to try those for the first time today.I was very surprised by its hang time and Turing speed.I feel that New NitroV6 is more powerful and its turning speed is faster than NitroV5.In addition to that, V6 can control the turning arc to be smaller than V5, so I could easily make mega kite loop.Regarding the relaunch performance, I'll test it in a few days and review it.
