Perfectly Balanced Aspect-Ratio

Aspect ratio (span squared / area) is a general measure of performance. Higher aspect kites may have a better lift/drag quotient at the expense of turning speed and relaunch. Lower aspect kites may be quicker to turn and easier to relaunch but less able to penetrate upwind. When the parameters are properly blended in a medium aspect design, the best of both are achieved.

Kiteboarding Element 5 Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite - Perfectly Balanced Aspect-Ratio

Optimised Three-Strut Design

Struts provide structure and form to define the kite’s shape - both Tip-to-Tip and Leading to Trailing Edge. While more struts (5+) allow a more precise and varied outline with excellent shape and canopy control, they also add weight. Fewer struts (0-2) save weight but limit outline options and reduce canopy support leaving large areas unsupported and subject to flapping. Three struts allow precise center canopy support and shape in addition to beneficial outline options while limiting flapping and drag in the wingtips.

Direct Pulley Free Bridle

In SLE (Supported Leading Edge kites) a bridle is used to support the kite’s leading edge shape while locating the front tow points to determine extent of de-power, turning speed and bar pressure. Bridles can either be active (variable geometry using pulleys/sliders) or passive (fixed geometry.) Pulleys allow the geometric distribution of loads and tow points to change at the expense of added moving components subject to potential failure and a vague feel on the bar. A fixed bridle requires a more precise kite and bridle combination but is extremely reliable and provides an incredible direct bar feel.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Three Strut Medium Aspect Open C Design

Three Strut Medium Aspect Open C Design

The Element5 features the stability of a C kite combined with the de-power of a bow kite. The 3-strut structure offers a lightweight, compact high performance design.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Wingtips

Wingtips

Wingtips feature a more shallow drafted high speed profile for reduced drag in turns and improved upwind efficiency. The wingtip sweep provides improved de-power while reducing weight and increasing efficiency and power.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Stable High Performance Central Profile

Stable High Performance Central Profile

The deep canopy profile supported structurally by constant curve struts features the thickest point quite far forward. Combined with a thin leading edge tube this creates a high performance, powerful and a stable wing.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Constant curve leading edge

Constant curve leading edge

The canopy shape is supported by a defined constant curve Leading Edge tube design without any flat sections or nodal corners. This allows us to create a rigid structure with reduced tube diameters for a more efficient lower drag shape and improved performance.

Trailing Edge Flow Control

Lightweight, 4 layered internally glued Monofilm stiffeners are strategically placed along the trailing edge to increase efficiency by minimizing coning and eliminating flapping.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Canopy Material

Canopy Material

Next to the actual kite design, the canopy fabric plays a very important role in your kite’s performance. Fabrics, with different stretch characteristics, will have an important effect on bar pressure, turn speed and the overall crisp feeling of your kite. A quick and lively kite can become dull and slow with heavy bar pressure when made with a different material. SwitchKites is constantly testing different materials in our test laboratory and in real life applications. After 16 months of testing, for our Element4, we have chosen a new 56 gr/m2 double rip stop fabric which has a 37% higher puncture tensile strength in the critical warp direction, with minimal weight increase. Being truly an all-terrain kite, we felt this feature was important for our customers who will use their kites in all possible demanding conditions.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Trailing Edge Material

Trailing Edge Material

Modern kite fabrics are incredibly strong and durable considering their light weight. However, the two main enemies are UV and flapping. Unfortunately, a brand new kite sitting on the beach in high winds can be destroyed within a few hours as the rigorous fabric movement during flapping causes the coating of the cloth to break down prematurely permanently weakening it. Unfortunately, there are instances where flapping cannot be avoided. We, therefore, use Chang Ho TT887, a 78 gr/m2 double rip-stop fabric which has a 173% higher tensile strength and excellent wind-flapping resilience in the trailing edge sections. As a result, we have substantially prolonged the life expectancy of this critical kite section.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Leading Edge and Strut Material

Leading Edge and Strut Material

We use Dimension-Polyant Dacron exclusively. Dimension-Polyant Dacron is the only sailcloth manufacturer with its own ultra- modern sailcloth-weaving mill and a unique finishing plant where the fabrics pass through a 14-stage program. Weaving, finishing and laminating – all in one location, made in Germany. It’s the most stable and durable structure that ensures the designed shape is retained for ultimate performance.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Double Dacron Strut Joints and Valve Positions

Double Dacron Strut Joints and Valve Positions

All stitching locations on any struts are internally reinforced first with Dacron and then adhesive-backed Dacron Mark Cloth to ensure the stitching doesn’t compromise the material. Strut seams are double stitched with a larger thread. Strut attachments are reinforced with webbing and all valve positions have extra reinforcing to prevent blowouts under high pressures and crashes.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Glued and Overlaid Seam Construction

Glued and Overlaid Seam Construction

We glue and double stitch the seams. One straight stitch folded over would be much faster and cheaper to produce, but it is simply not as strong.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Framed Canopy

Framed Canopy

Fully glued canopy framing of Dacron and adhesive-backed Mark Cloth for extra strength along struts, leading edge, trailing edges and wingtips.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Reinforced Strut/Canopy Attachment

Reinforced Strut/Canopy Attachment

We added an additional layer of Canopy material and a doubled angular reinforcement at the Leading Edge in all strut areas to create a solid foundation for our struts and reduce impact failure during high velocity crashes.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Canopy Attachment

Canopy Attachment

Why are we not using one single row of three-step zigzag like all the others? Every added hole in the leading edge weakens the structure. If you need to add holes, they must be spaced out as far as possible. We use a more time consuming two rows of two-step zigzag to produce considerable added strength to the design.

Kiteboarding Wave Freeride All Terrain Kite Element 5 - Bomb Proof Leading Edge Closure

Bomb Proof Leading Edge Closure

Double-reinforced with Dacron, the LE seam is fully glued, double-folded and double stitched with an exterior webbing cover for ultimate strength and durability. Extra heavy thread is used to protect against ruptures and blowouts.

I've been riding the Element 5 10m for about 6 months almost exclusively with a foilboard after having ridden RPMs (8,10,12) for last 4 or 5 years. The element 10m has replaced my 10m and 12m RPM completely. While the RPM 12m has a lot of grunt it is a sluggish kite that takes a lot of input and work to get it up to speed. The agility of the Element seems to let it develop more downstroke power than the 12 RPM so that I'm up and planing am most of the time don't need the grunt of the bigger kite.

Build quality is excellent. My first impression was that it was bit heavier that the 10 RPM and while I still think that might be the case this doesn't affect the wind range or agility at all. It does however make for a confidence inspiring solid construction.

I ride a foil in chop and 2-4 ft swell. Kite drifts very well and the acceleration and the turning speed mean that the kite ends up exactly where you expect it to without thinking to much. This is something I've loved about very small kites c. 5m. The move so quickly that you don't have to pre-plan your moves, its a case of send and forget. The Element has this feel.

Overall very happy and price is great. Only small caution I have is that the knots in the bridle and the knots on the connection points are quick bulky and when self launching in strong winds I had the lines get stuck on the knots and not release. In modest winds it no problem, you can just yank the lines and it pops off. I now walk the kite well clear f the lines and check there no chance of catching. Not a biggie at all but added it completeness.

Great job the Switch team. Love ya work!

I have been flying the Element model since v3 I was wondering how different the 5 would be.
Its Faster more Responsive and very predictable. The Drift has been improved tremendously .
It has allowed me to focus on riding the waves instead of focusing on my kite.
The kite basically is on Auto pilot when going down the wave.
If you are into waves give this kite a go.
Highly recommend it. (Posted on 5/02/17)

I have a 9m Element 5 and I solely use this kite in the waves on a surf board because I use my Nitro's in the flat on a TT.
The kite is fast and responsive and still drifts smoothly with you. You can put the kite in the wrong place and with a small pull on the bar the kite is quickly back in front of you. Awesome! You can focus on ripping the wave and not worry as much about the kite. (Posted on 3/02/17)

For more than one year I have been a fan of the Element kite, but the Version 5 , in my opinion, is a good step ahead of many other wave kites.
I used it in every wind and wave conditions and the kite always performed with excellence.
The fast turning speed allows also a nice drift in light wind.
I enjoy to ride the Element5 also on the hydrofoil because of the fantastic turning speed and the light bar feeling .
We use the Element5 for kite lesson and is the strongest and durable kite we ever used.
A beginner would have an easy progression in the kite surfing learning curve. A big smile is the feedback of a beginner that uses element5.

I'm riding the E5 in 7, 9 and 11m. The 11 and 9 m are my preferred foilboard kites because the E5 stay so stable in the air even with the lowest wind. For foiling and my 80 kg the 11m is my choice for low wind foiling. Even if the kite drops into water it is such easy to relaunch. Even with max depower the kite is reacting perfectly on every bar advice. Both attributes are also perfect for beginners. Also in the waves the kite is a dream, with the two different line options you could choose between powerful turns or fast turnarounds. The fast setting improves my wave riding a lot because you could change so fast the riding direction.
Definitely a perfect beginner, foil and wave kite! (Posted on 26/01/17)

I have been using the Element model for a few years now - started with the 3rd version and now on the Element5.

It's a great all-terrain kite, I almost exclusively use it with a strapless surfboard in the waves but occasionally use it with my snowboard or mountainboard, and increasingly with my foilboard.

It's a safe and predictable kite, easy to relaunch even in the lightest breeze.

I would recommend it to beginners and intermediate riders for its ease of use, and to more advanced riders who enjoy wave riding or freeride foiling (or both!) (Posted on 25/01/17)

Normally I don't like 4 lines kites and all those bridges technology but with Element 5th team bring out an amazing 3 struts combination, no pulley as all the others switch models come with, light bar pressure without loosing your kite feeling. Quick and responsive, great down wind drifting, soft and gentle kite loops are the basic behaviors of Element 5th . I did not try the past years version but I can say that Element 5th is the machine it can be use for all the disciplines; freestyle, wave riding, freeride and even for foiling too. Lately I have been riding it with my foil board and for me one of the best downwind ability ever

Great Surf/Freeride KiteReview by Greg
After years of riding high performance kites I bought a couple of Elements to get a more surf-oriented kite for blasting waves and freeriding on a hydrofoil.

As a wave kite I could not be happier. Even on the slow turning setting it rotates in its own length and you just have to think about where you want it to go and it goes there. It has revolutionised my wave riding.

Both my hydrofoil and surfboard were in for repairs so I dug out the old TT for a bit of exercise. At first it felt a bit underpowered and dull. But once I got used to it I had a load of fun, landing kite loop after kite loop. Float is not so remarkable but pop and agility is really good fun.

On the foil it takes a fair bit of adjustment. The Element loves back line pressure. Its not happy to sit on the front lines and cruise like a high performance race kite. But the speed and agility makes carving transitions on the foil effortless. The more I use it the more I like it. (Posted on 30/09/16)

First ride yesterday. Deliberated on using the Element 13M or my Helium 18M as wind only 13 knots in Sanu/Bali but took the Element. It handled the light wind surprisingly well & when it increased to 16 knots it was just perfect. Great in surf, no stalling, nice upwind, easy jibing. Usual Switch quality. Nice work, great value. 9M element 5Review by don
I have been kiting with low aspect brand kites for several years. My style places me in the surf and doing freestyle with lots of loops on twin tip boards... Biggest problem i have had is with my aggressive loop style, the leading edge would occasionally buckle near back bridle attachment points (yes, they were well pressurized). This results in an immediate loss of power and ultimately leading edge rupture due to fabric failure from cyclic flexing (i have had two kites fail from this and both were less than 15 months aged). When i purchased the element5 to replace my latest failure first thing i did was to load it as hard as i could (i am 190lbs and typically ride a 140cm x 43cm tt). What i notice is the loop control was phenomenal, allowing loops so tight (they practically pivot on them selves) to huge arcs that deliver extreme power. It appears the shape of the leading edge forces a twist when turning hard , opposed to "bowing" the typically stressed LE at bridal attachment points. The bridal also has a "pivot" adjustment which is supposed to allow tighter less powered loops, but i have not experimented with this feature to date...
Of course i have splashed the kite. Relaunch was pretty routine, thankful that the bridal design prevents wrap around kite tips..
I no longer cringe (anticipating LE collapse) when i execute an aggressive loop and am enjoying the development of new skills as i learn how to extract the most performance from this kite design. Construction is top notch using materials and methods found in brands costing hundreds of dollars more..... (Posted on 26/07/16)

Love at first flight 13m element 5Review by Tom
I think I may have been one of the first to put in my order of the new element 5. I just couldnt wait. And I was right. Got to pump up my 13m for the first time in very varied and light wind. At best we had some small whitecaps but mostly a westerly breeze blowing gently over Botany Bay that I though I just may be able to get going in.

Straight away you could feel how easily this kite turned for being in light winds for a start and also its size. This was exactly what I wanted. I've had so many days where it's been borderline with the wind. This kite saved my first session on it by flying so smoothly, easily and quickly. Love at first flight. I also managed to pick up a 136mj comp2 board 2nd hand so the combo was great. Transitions were really nice given how easily the kite turned.

Only one complaint was the middle strut connecting tubing seemed a little long. It caused it to kink so was a bit fiddly getting the air to go through to the middle Strut. I think I'll just need to trim it a little shorter and it should be fine.

Overal this is the nicest, coolest looking and kite I've owned. Saying a lot after one mediocre light wind session. But hey I'm saying it. Thanks switch great job (Posted on 13/05/16)

Element 5th 9m2.

Nice, user-friendly kite. It has very simple control without any surprises, but with good depower. Great for beginners and learning kiteloops. Kiteloops are very soft and nice, turning speed is very fast (Posted on 19/10/16)
Element 5 8m surfing and foilingReview by Comar
What a great kite, user friendly but not boring at all! Loaded with good performances, love it for foiling and waves, direct control, light and precise at the bar, drift and loop well, you can tune it with few good options plus very good construction!
Got it for few months now and really love it in all conditions.
Good rides! (Posted on 2/10/16)
Great Surf/Freeride KiteReview by Greg

(Posted on 30/09/16)
Element 5 13MReview by angus
First ride yesterday. Deliberated on using the Element 13M or my Helium 18M as wind only 13 knots in Sanu/Bali but took the Element. It handled the light wind surprisingly well & when it increased to 16 knots it was just perfect. Great in surf, no stalling, nice upwind, easy jibing. Usual Switch quality. Nice work, great value. element 1 3 5!!!Review by panos
I have an element 1 and I cannot say that I really like it but recently I tried an element 3 belonging to a friend, and I saw tremendus changes..it was as fast as required, stable during jumps and hang time.it never stalles predictable during loops and pleasant during unhook tricks...I must say that I am looking forward in buying the element 5 and trying a nitro 5!
